You should have picked me for your House
— Darrow after kicking Proctor Mercury's ass, Red Rising, Ch. 42: War on Heaven

House Mercury is one of the schoolHouses of The Institute. Their standard is unknown, but it likely includes a winged sandal.

Castle[]

Nothing is known of Castle Mercury at The Institute on Mars, other than it is located in the Southern regions of the Institute grounds.[1]

Proctor[]

Proctor Mercury for the Institute of Mars is an unnamed jovial and jittery Gold man who often fiddles with his hands. He is a cherub of a man, small, squat and baby faced with coiled golden hair. His cheeks flush rosy. He can flourish a razor like a poet with a quill. He makes a strong argument to the Draft committee to select Darrow in the first round. However, they pass him over, intending to pick him in Round Two.

During Darrow's assault on Olympus, Darrow finds Proctor Mercury facing down a half dozen of his troops while laughing hysterically. The Proctor wears a bathrobe and dances like a maniac around the swordthrusts of three DeadHorses. Darrow notes the Proctor moves like a Red miner as Mercury makes work of Darrow's troops by kicking groins, kneeing faces, and cutting off thumbs. However Darrow is faster and manages to crack the Proctor's bones and knock him down.

Attributes[]

House Mercury is home to the quick, clever and tricksters. They often like playing games of speed like slapping each other's knuckles to see who can move the fastest. Little else is known about this house.

Involvement[]

By the time Darrow and Virginia's Warband make their stand against House Apollo, House Mercury has lost their castle and been reduced to a roaming band, seemingly under sieges by House Apollo.[1][2] They are conquered after Darrow's Warband leaves for House Jupiter.

Trivia[]

  • In Roman Mythology, Mercury is the Messenger God, as well as the God of commerce, luck, and trickery.
