Whites are a highColor, though not as high level as Gold. Many are priests and priestesses who oversee the ritual functions of Society, preserving the traditions of old. They arbitrate justice and push their philosophy. The rituals they conduct tend to be carried out by virgin maidens wielding iron daggers and gold laurels, while children carry triangular standards of scepters, swords, and scrolls with laurels. Many others fulfill the role of a mentor, teaching young Golds about their role in Society. Despite these roles, it is stated that some white Judiciars also wielded real power in the Society. Overall, Whites fulfill many of the religious, educational, and appraisal functions.

White Justices & Chances[]

The highest honor any White can achieve, is to become a Justice. Young Whites who begin training to become Justices are known as a Chance. While most other Whites study in local cloisters, Chances are initiated into monastic sanctuaries, where they study and meditate, seeking to abandon their humanity and embody the spirit of justice. After a lifetime within these sanctuaries, if a Chance reaches a state of transcendence and has the courage, she may chemically blind herself. At this, she has now become a Justice, the most elite of the hierophants.

Traditional Gold trials and duels are officiated and overseen by the Fates: a pair consisting of an elder Justice and their Chance. In duels, the Justice bears an iron rod and laurel branch. They gives the opening benediction and is seated on a chair of bone. The Chance carries a bag of white sand and creates a ring around the duelists. Lastly, they initiates the duel by breaking a small branch of elm.

In Gold trials, the Justice sits on a seat of elm, while the Chance instead sits on a chair of bone. The purpose of the Fates in this case, is to assess the trial and intervene to levy additional charges. The Chance bears a small iron bell.

Whites

Based on their judgment, they may ring her bell. This is where the term "unless chance strikes" originates from. Upon doing so, the trial is interrupted, and they will pass her recommendation of additional charges to the Court. While the Whites are incapable of enforcing the accusation and are not required to provide evidence, it is unthinkable for courts to disregard a Chance's recommendation. This Chance was instrumental in pushing The Rim Olympic Councils to levy the additional charge condemning their sovereign.

Arbiters[]

Commonly, many Whites do not take the path of the Justice. In the Core, many Whites seek out more profitable and worldly pursuits. For example, some may take up roles as brokers for guilds, referred to as an Arbiter. A White Arbiter from the Ophion Guild, for example, brokered an agreement with Dido au Romulus to exchange sensitive information. Oslo, a White Arbiter secretly working for the Syndicate, utilizes their extensive studies of history and military, to appraise artifacts. They are described as wearing a white business suit and living in a lavish penthouse.

Other Roles[]

Whites who serve more ritualistic roles provide benedictions at weddings or perform executions.

Though Grays act as law enforcement along with the ever-obedient Obsidians, Whites also possess many methods for extracting information out of fugitives. Matteo implies that they have specially built facilities for this purpose, and utilize crude methods such as bodily mutilation all the way to truth serums.

Naming Convention[]

Their naming system seems to be very simple, as most are named after virtues, or similar. There appears to be no system of family names or surnames, as all the Whites seen have only first names.

Guilds[]

White Arbiters serve as brokers who handle the contracts and deals between two or more parties. The Guilds are the official Arbiter organizations who appear to act as free agents in the Red Rising universe. The Guilds auction off valuable items, such as the Dawn of Hermes, a piece of art crafted by the Master Maker Glirastes. Virginia noted that the Reds who were liberated from the mines were represented by White Arbiter Guilds who assisted the Reds in choosing gross proceeds instead of a one-time buyout. Silvers like Britannia ag Krieg made her fortunes negotiating buyouts from the liberated Reds. Quicksilver's Sun Industries made a mad-dash to buyout the majority of the H-3 market. Two named Guilds have been identified so far, the Ophion Guild and the Amani Guild.

Ophion Guild[]

The Ophion Guild was introduced via Oslo, the point of contact for Ephraim for freelance work. Oslo was a member of the Ophion Guild and it was later revealed that Oslo and the Ophion Guild are in league with the Syndicate. In Iron Gold, a White from the Ophion Guild contacted Dido au Raa to offer an exchange of information. Later it was revealed that the White offered evidence of how the Docks of Ganymede were actually destroyed. Romulus au Raa received a similar offer, he invited the Arbiters to the Rim and slaughtered them with a warhawk, burned their ship and what he thought was the only physical copy of the evidence. Later, Romulus would be sentenced to death in part for the murder of the Arbiters. The Ophion Guild auctioned off the Dawn of Hermes to Quicksilver for ninety-four billion credits.

Amani Guild[]

The Amani Guild is another Guild mentioned during an exchange between Holiday and Ephraim. Holiday explained Virginia had a contract drafted by the Ophion Guild detailing the release of Volga upon Pax and Electra's return. Ephraim asked for a contract from the Amani Guild because the Ophion Guild was in league with the Syndicate.

Menta School[]

In Dark Age (pg 326), Xenophon mentioned his graduation from the Menta. Alluding to a school system similar to the colors.
